How could counselling help you?

You may be thinking about counselling for a range of reasons:

  • Do you have a pattern of behaviour that you want to change, such as angry outbursts or persistent negative thinking?
  • Have you become depressed or anxious about something?
  • Do you struggle to accept and value yourself?
  •

  • Are you finding your relationships at home or at work difficult to manage or understand?
  • Do you need support to recover from a shock or trauma?
  • Do you want to manage stress or understand yourself better at a time of change or crisis?
  •

If you are willing to explore your feelings, and if you are open to change, then counselling will help you.

    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

The main 'mode' or type of counselling/therapy that I use is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

CBT is a popular and effective approach to help people who experience a wide range of mental health difficulties. The basis of CBT is that what people think affects how they feel emotionally and also alters what they do.

During times of mental distress the way the person sees and judges themselves and the things that happens to them alters. Things tend to become more extreme and unhelpful. This can worsen how the person feels and causes them to act in ways that keep their distress going.

CBT practitioners aim to work jointly with the person to help them begin to identify and then change their extreme thinking and unhelpful behaviour. By doing this, the result is a significant improvement in how the person feels and lives their day to day life.

In order to get the most out of working with CBT, you will need to explore and challenge your thinking patterns. For a free document about thinking errors and thinking skills, click here.

You will also need to be prepared to do some work in between sessions. For more explanation about CBT and what to expect in the sessions, click here.
